Jeannette Scahill

Dr. Jeannette Lois Scahill passed away April 4, 2011. Memorial services will be held at Christ United Methodist Church, 14506 E. 39th St., Independence, MO. on Monday, April 11, 10:30 a.m. with visitation prior to the service at 9:30 a.m. Jeannette was born September 29, 1928 in Claycomo, Missouri to Corinne and Thomas Scahill. Her mother passed away just before Jeannette’s sixth birthday and her father later entered the ministry. The family moved frequently and Jeannette attended 9 elementary schools in 8 years and 2 high schools, graduating from Hale, Missouri High School in 1946. She then attended Central Methodist University (then Central College), completed a Master’s Degree at the University of Wyoming and the Ph.D degree from the University of Iowa in 1963. Dr. Scahill received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Central Methodist University. Her teaching career included 7 years in the public school of Effingham, Kansas, Worland, Wyoming and Los Alamos, New Mexico. Dr. Scahill then taught for 7 years at Central Washington State (Ellensburg), Texas Tech University (Lubbock) and Central Missouri State (Warrensburg) before completing her career on the faculty at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa, 1965-1991). Since retirement her interests included sports, theater, travel and participation in Christ United Methodist Church where she served as President of the United Methodist Women for 8 years. She was a member of the Agape group and taught the Asbury Sunday School class. Dr. Scahill was preceded in death by her parents, step-mother Josephine and brother, Thomas Jefferson Scahill, Jr. She is survived by her sisters, Anne Scahill of Kansas City, Vanita Leaton of Knoxville, Tennessee; her brother Dr. Joseph Scahill and sister-in-law Marilyn of Bellevue, Nebraska and sister-in-law Edna Scahill of Raytown, Missouri Having no children of her own she often “spoiled” her much loved—but often bedeviled nieces and nephews, Tom F., Cyndy, Debbie, Mark, Melinda, Andrew, Tim, Allison, Dianne, Clarke and Amy Jeannette. In lieu of flowers the family requests Memorials be made to Christ United Methodist Church, 14506 East 39th Street, Independence, Mo. 64055
